Operating System Troubleshooting

The most common Chrome OS software problems relate to performance, printing, account access, freezing, connectivity, and hardware peripherals. The solutions often involve troubleshooting steps like uninstalling unused apps, resetting the device, and ensuring Chrome OS is up-to-date.

Sign-in and Account Problems

  • Verify the student’s correct username and password
  • Sign out, Remove the User, and re-add the user account on the Chromebook (this is the most common troubleshooting that corrects a wide range of problems)

Slow Performance

  • Uninstall unused apps and extensions to free up system resources
  • Close unnecessary tabs, as having too many open can slow down performance
  • Clear User’s Google Sync
  • As a last resort, perform a full system reset (Powerwash) to start fresh

Freezing and Unresponsiveness

  • For a frozen Chromebook, try a hard reset
  • Or perform a Powerwash to reset the device

Connectivity Problems

  • Check that the Chromebook is connected to the correct WiFi network
  • Clear the Chrome browser history and cache if webpages are loading slowly
  • Try a hard reset
  • Try direct connecting the device to a wired internet connection to isolate the cause
  • Lastly, perform a Powerwash to reset the device

Camera and Microphone Issues

  • Restart the Chromebook and ensure Chrome OS is fully updated
  • Try using an alternative app to test if the issue is software-related
  • Perform a Powerwash to reset the device
  • If none of these troubleshooting steps work, it may be hardware-related

Printer Issues

  • Chrome OS should automatically detect and make available any printers on the network
  • You can also manually add a printer by entering its IP address in the Chrome OS settings
  • Save frequently used printers in the Chrome OS settings for easy access
