Chrome OS Update Frequency and Delivery
- Chrome OS devices receive automatic software updates every 2-3 weeks, sometimes even more frequently
- These updates are delivered directly from Google to all Chrome OS devices, without involvement from device manufacturers
- Updates include security fixes, bug patches, and new features
- Google also publishes detailed release notes about each update on the official Chrome Releases blog
Update Channels and Early Access
- Chrome OS has three update channels – Stable, Beta, and Dev
- Users can switch to the Beta or Dev channels to get early access to new features, but these channels may be less stable
Update Support Duration
- All Chrome OS devices now receive automatic updates for a minimum of 6.5 years from the launch of their chipset
- Starting in 2024, Chrome OS devices released from 2021 onwards will get 10 years of automatic updates
- Even after the automatic update period ends, Chrome OS devices retain security features like Verified Boot

- Every time the Chromebook starts up, it does a self-check called “Verified Boot.” If it detects that the system has been tampered with or corrupted in any way, typically it will repair itself without any effort, taking the Chromebook back to an operating system that’s as good as new.
